Stunning antique Victorian brooch featuring a hand-carved shell cameo of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and fertility. The cameo depicts Bacchus with a vine leaf headdress, set in an elegant gold-tone oval frame.

Size: Approx. 4 cm x 3.3 cm

Condition:
The shell cameo is slightly irregular in shape, resulting in a small gap between the shell and the frame on the left-hand side (please see photos). Otherwise, it’s in great antique condition with a secure pin fastening. The metal has not been tested.

A Little History:
Cameo brooches have been popular for centuries, reaching their peak during the Victorian era. These miniature works of art often feature classical figures, gods, and scenes, carved from materials such as shell, lava, or stone. They became symbols of status and elegance, worn to showcase wealth and taste. Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, fertility, and revelry, was a popular subject, representing abundance and joy.

This is a beautiful piece of wearable history, perfect for collectors or anyone who appreciates Victorian craftsmanship.
